Bali and Java: Folk Art and Tradition
Now on View at San Francisco International Airport
SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco International Airport’s new exhibition, Bali and Java: Folk Art and Tradition, presents one hundred objects from these Indonesian islands to illustrate the value and persistence of traditional beliefs and creations in one of the most engaging, elegant, aesthetic and spiritual cultures to be found in the world.
The exhibition includes shadow puppets, masks, embroidered cloths and paintings depicting the gods, goddesses, and other sacred figures integral to Bali and Java’s most popular forms of entertainment, the wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater), wayang topeng and wayang wong (masked dance/dramas). Traditional heroes, heroines, and popular narrative figures, including princes, warriors, clowns, giants, ogres and soldiers feature prominently in the works on display.
Items that are used in religious practice and traditional performances, as well as those made for tourists and export, are included in the exhibition.
All objects in the exhibition are courtesy of Clare and Joseph Fischer.
Bali and Java: Folk Art and Tradition is located pre-security in the International Terminal Main Hall, and is on view twenty-four hours a day through March 26, 2007. There is no charge to view the exhibition.
San Francisco Airport Museums
The San Francisco Airport Museums program was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. The Museum was granted initial accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1999, reaccredited in 2005, and has the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. Today, the San Francisco Airport Museums features approximately twenty galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions, as well as the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, a permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation.
