Marbles from the Classical World Come to SFO
New Exhibition Features Sculpture Collection from the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Airport Museums’ newest exhibition, Marbles from the Classical World, brings 32 examples of sculpture from the height of the Roman Empire to SFO’s International Terminal. Covering approximately the first century BCE to the third century CE, the exhibition features pieces from the Republic, early Augustan, Julio/Claudian, late Flavian, Trajanic, Hadrian, Antonine, Severan, and Diocletianic periods.

The exhibition is structured to provide insight into different realms of life in the Roman Empire, including style and fashion, families, mythology and Imperial Rome. Many of the objects depict well-known figures, such as Julius Caesar, Trajan, Augustus, Zeus and Dionysos.

All objects are from the collection of the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Phoebe Apperson Hearst was an avid collector at the turn of the last century, who financed several scientific expeditions that resulted from 1901, in collections from classical Mediterranean lands gathered with the specific intent of building a collection for the University of California, Berkeley. Because of severely limited exhibition space, most of the works from the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum’s collection of over 8,000 classical antiquities have gone unexhibited for many years.

Marbles from the Classical World is on view twenty-four hours a day from June 27, 2005 through January 7, 2006, free of charge. The exhibition is located pre-security on the Departures/Ticketing Level of the International Terminal.
