From Ship to Shore: Nautical Arts from the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
New exhibition features nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sea-inspired artifacts

SAN FRANCISCO – For centuries, people have traveled the seas exploring new territories, engaging in trade, fishing, and whaling.  Mariners spent long periods of time confined to a ship surrounded by the sea. To pass the time during slow periods and calm seas, sailors adapted their varied skill sets to a number of handicrafts.  Using their imagination, men transformed materials such as wood, bone, and rope into a variety of folk art.

From Ship to Shore: Nautical Arts from the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park features nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sea-inspired artifacts.  Masthead ornaments, scrimshaw, fancy ropework, ships-in-bottles, shadowbox half-models, a hand-painted sea chest, and a whalebone chair are some of the many objects on display.

From Ship to Shore: Nautical Arts from the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is located beyond security screening in Terminal 2, Departures Level, San Francisco International Airport.  The exhibition is on view to Terminal 2 ticketed passengers from May 25, 2013 to December 8, 2013.  There is no charge to view the exhibition.

SFO Museum

SFO Museum was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public.  The Museum was granted initial accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1999, reaccredited in 2005, and has the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport.  Today, SFO Museum features approximately twenty galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions, as well as the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, a permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation. For more information, please visit www.flysfo.com/museum.
