San Francisco Opera: A Centennial Celebration
New exhibition at SFO’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 celebrates one-hundred years of San Francisco Opera history.
SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Opera has presented renowned operatic performances for one-hundred seasons, drawing international superstars, commissioning exciting new productions, and debuting legendary singers. San Franciscans have enjoyed opera since the days of the Gold Rush, when in 1851, the Pellegrini Opera Company, a traveling Italian troupe, performed the first opera in the city. San Francisco Opera debuted on September 26, 1923, with La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, under the leadership of conductor and founding director Gaetano Merola. Nine years later during the height of the Great Depression, Puccini’s Tosca opened the War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco Opera’s legendary home. This year, San Francisco Opera marks their centennial season with fifty performances of eight operas, in addition to special concerts and events throughout the city that include this exhibition.
