We Are All Connected: Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest

For the past thirty-four years, Lions Clubs around the globe have sponsored a unique art contest in schools and youth groups that provides students the opportunity to promote peace. Creating peace posters allows children to express their visions of peace, while inspiring amity through art and creativity. Each year, over half a million students, ages eleven through thirteen, participate. The students employ a variety of mediums, such as graphite, pen and ink, markers, and watercolors. One grand prize winner and twenty-three merit award winners are announced each year on Lions Day at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

“We Are All Connected” was the theme for 2021–22 school year. This exhibition features the 2021–22 grand prize winner and merit award winners from seven different countries: Slovenia, Portugal, Australia, Mexico, the United States, China, and South Korea. Thirteen-year-old grand prize winner Anja Rožen of Slovenia, who was sponsored by the Slovenj Gradec Lions Club, created a striking poster of arms representing the Earth knitting people of all colors together. Thirteen-year-old merit award winner Hannah Roberts of Australia produced a compelling image of a young girl’s face with the continents of Eurasia, North America, South America, Australia, and Africa, dramatically gracing her hair, forehead, eyes, and cheeks. A poster by twelve-year-old Xingying Wang of China playfully illustrates the preservation of aquatic life deep under the sea.

Founded in 1917, Lions Clubs International is the largest humanitarian organization in the world. Lion and Leo members devote their time and efforts to improving communities around the globe. There are approximately fifty thousand Lions Clubs in two hundred and fifteen countries. Typically, local Lions Clubs sponsor participants. Alternatively, Silicon Valley Cyber Lions Club, a Visionary Model Club without borders in the San Francisco Bay Area, sponsors participants and provides peace poster contest kits for students. The nonprofit Legacy Through Giving Foundation also provides funds for contest kits and exhibit materials. Special thank you to Silicon Valley Cyber Lions Club for making this exhibition possible.
