Mission
SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport.
Land Acknowledgement
SFO Museum respectfully acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone—the original inhabitants and stewards of the San Francisco Peninsula. Please join us in recognizing and honoring Ramaytush Ohlone ancestors, descendants, and all Indigenous communities who have inhabited the Bay Area for hundreds of generations.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
SFO Museum is deeply committed to diversity—the ways in which people are different, equity—providing all with access to equal opportunities, and inclusion—where every individual is valued, welcomed, and treated fairly and respectfully. We continue to learn, grow, and evolve in our journey to become a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace and museum, and we strive to reflect these principles in our exhibitions and collections development. SFO Museum believes that art, craft, and material culture have the power to provide unique perspectives, connect communities, and encourage empathy, while celebrating our shared humanity and creativity. We are dedicated to fostering an accessible and welcoming environment for our global audience regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, nationality, ability, socioeconomic background, or age.
DEI Implementation
SFO Museum is proud to belong to a museum community that is working to correct past and present missteps and injustices, where critical voices were silenced and essential people were erased from the dominant historical narrative. We recognize missed opportunities to diversify museum collections and exhibitions. To make our aviation collection more inclusive and equitable, our Collections Review Committee is actively seeking donations, acquiring objects, and capturing oral histories that engage Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, and Latinx experiences in commercial aviation, as well as contributions from other diverse racial and ethnic communities. Together, we are partnering with women and LGBTQ professionals in the field to develop a museum collection that reflects the makeup of the commercial aviation industry workforce. To make our general exhibitions program more inclusive and equitable, we are directly consulting with cultural groups; actively expanding our lender base; and identifying objects, artists, and voices that represent these diverse contributions to cultural, artistic, and scientific achievement. Situated within the unique setting of a major airport in the city of San Francisco, we are driven by SFO’s status as an international gateway in our pursuit of excellence and service to the public.
