To Survive on this Shore | Jess T. Dugan and Vanessa Fabbre 
Photography exhibition in SFO’s Ruth S. Kadish Gallery by Jess T. Dugan and Vanessa Fabbre showcases portraits and stories from older transgender and gender nonconforming adults.

SAN FRANCISCO—For over five years (2013–2018), photographer Jess T. Dugan and social worker Vanessa Fabbre traveled throughout the United States creating To Survive on This Shore: Photographs and Interviews with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Older Adults. Seeking subjects whose lived experiences exist within the complex intersections of gender identity, age, race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, and geographic location, they traveled from coast to coast, to big cities and small towns, documenting the life stories of this important but largely underrepresented group of older adults. The featured individuals have a wide variety of life narratives spanning the last ninety years, offering an important historical record of transgender experience and activism in the United States. 

The resulting portraits and interviews provide a nuanced view into the struggles and joys of growing older as a transgender person and offer a poignant reflection on what it means to live authentically despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

To Survive on this Shore is located in the secure connector between Terminals 2 and 3, from December 06, 2022 to July 13, 2023. The exhibition is located post-security and is only accessible to passengers ticketed for travel through Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and International Boarding Area G via a post-security connector. There is no charge to view the exhibition.

About Ruth S. Kadish

Ruth Kadish (1916–2011), who became SFO’s first female Airport Commissioner in 1976, championed public art at the Airport and provided her full support to launch the exhibitions program that became SFO Museum, the first of its kind in the industry. The Airport’s Ruth S. Kadish Gallery, originally dedicated in 2001, has been rebuilt as a space to exhibit photography celebrating the unique cultural, historical, and natural features of California, while connecting it to the larger context of the medium’s history.
