New Exhibition at San Francisco International Airport Explores the History of Baseball's Pacific Coast League
SAN FRANCISCO – Pacific Coast League: the West Coast’s Major League 1903-1957, a new exhibition at San Francisco International Airport, highlights baseball’s Pacific Coast League’s (PCL) classic era. On view are nearly 300 objects including uniforms, equipment, scorecards, souvenir items and historic photographs documenting the colorful players, coaches and managers who thrilled crowds from Lane Field in San Diego to Sick’s Seattle Stadium.
Pacific Coast League traces the League’s development from its formation in 1903 to the 1950s, when the arrival of the National League in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1958 caused the PCL’s exit from the West Coast’s largest cities. The exhibition concentrates on the PCL’s primary eight teams: the San Francisco Seals, Oakland Oaks, Los Angeles Angels, Hollywood Stars, Seattle Rainiers, Portland Beavers, San Diego Padres and Sacramento Solons. Among the exhibition’s featured items are Oakland Oaks pitcher Cy Parkin’s championship watch fob (1912), a San Francisco Seals Opening Day pennant (1915), a Seattle Rainiers championship team-signed platter made by trainer Louis “Doc” Richards (1939), and complete uniforms from all of the historic franchises.
Pacific Coast League: the West Coast’s Major League 1903-1957 is located pre-security in the International Terminal Main Hall, and is on view twenty-four hours a day through October 30, 2009. There is no charge to view the exhibition.

San Francisco Airport Museums
The San Francisco Airport Museums program was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. The Museum was granted initial accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1999, reaccredited in 2005, and has the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. Today, the San Francisco Airport Museums features approximately twenty galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions, as well as the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, a permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation.
