Scott Dalton: China, Tibet, and Nepal

Houston-based, award-winning photographer and filmmaker Scott Dalton graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a photojournalism degree. In 2006, Dalton traveled to Taiwan for the first time to screen his documentary film LA SIERRA, a story about a neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia, ruled by a paramilitary gang. He decided to take advantage of the opportunity to relax and experience new things by traveling through Asia. For three weeks, the beauty, history, culture, and people of China, Tibet, and Nepal awed Dalton.

This body of work represents a transitional period in Dalton’s photographic career. He had worked primarily as a freelance photographer, garnering a fourteen-year stint with the Associated Press while based in Panama, Guatemala, and Colombia. He considers this series of images as a personal photographic journal; they were not made as part of an assignment, just photographs taken on long walks and drives while traveling. This exhibition is composed of urban and rural images that visually explore how people in both countries express themselves culturally, religiously, and socially. His images of farm life suggest a nurturing tie to the land and the environment.

Dalton photographs both editorial and corporate assignments while spending his free time working on long-term personal projects using medium-format film. Currently, he is working along the troubled border region near Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. His photography has appeared in National Geographic, Harper's, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker, GEO, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Business Week, and The Wall Street Journal. His documentary film, LA SIERRA, won numerous awards and broadcasted on PBS, BBC, and HBO Latino.
