Photography: A Means of Expression

Located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, University High School (UHS) is an academically rigorous independent high school. UHS welcomes students who demonstrate motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge.  UHS is a school where adults believe in the promise of every student and work together to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. At UHS, the arts program is an academic department and a vibrant, integral part of the community. The school values the vital role that the arts play in a stimulating and inspired education. Students are encouraged to excel beyond a technical knowledge of each discipline to form a more conceptual and historical understanding of the arts.

Photography students begin their studies by using film cameras to create black-and-white photographs from negatives in a traditional wet darkroom. Many students proceed to learn color photography using digital cameras and digital-imaging software. In every photography course, emphasis is placed on learning visual literacy, which is the ability to interpret information presented in the form of  an image. Along with composition, form, and technical skills, students learn how to understand the many images that surround them and how to express complex ideas, concepts, themes, and personal feelings using a camera.
