Spontaneous Expression by Red Poppy Art House
The Family Art Program at the Red Poppy Art House, a neighborhood center for cultural and inter-generational artistic engagement in the Mission district of San Francisco. The program provides a variety of art activities for the local Spanish-speaking communities in the neighbor. Many participants are low-income immigrants who are currently being displaced due to gentrification in the neighborhood.
Every Saturday, the Family Art Program takes place outdoors on the corner of Folsom Street and Twenty-third Street. Parents and children can stop by and enjoy a variety of stimulating art activities. During the three-hour event, participants freely engage their creativity. These activities are mainly focus on parent-child interaction within a broader framework of socio-cultural awareness.
Spontaneous Expression captures the essence of what emerges when a paintbrush in the hand of a child meets a canvas during Family Art. The artwork, made outside on blank canvas, without any restrictions invites neighborhood children to creatively express themselves. The children who participated in this collaboration are a small selection from the many spontaneous visitors who attended the program during a regular session of Family Art.
