California College of the Arts’ (CCA) design program includes the course Machinic Modernity, which is taught by Erik Adigard and Ignacio Valero. The class intersects contemporary design practices with a global understanding of “progress” framed by Western interpretations of modernity and technology. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) design student Celia Ziyan Cai’s project for Machinic Modernity, Constitution, reflects identity in today’s digital-oriented society. With herself as the subject, the artist uses a rich mix of images, graphics, and typography to explore how the relationships between organic beings and artificial beings are constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in digital environments. The designs are presented as a dramaturgy structured in four parts: Identity, Community, Environment, and Catharsis.

California College of the Arts (CCA) attracts promising students from around the world with a mission to advance culture and society through the practice and critical study of art, architecture, design, and writing. CCA’s MFA Design program combines graphic design, industrial design, and interactive design using a future-oriented approach, which promotes the convergence of design research, critical thinking, exploratory creativity, and advanced technologies. By emphasizing environmental and societal concerns, the program inspires and prepares an emerging generation of designers to frame the next economies and ecologies.
