Here and Home: Contemporary Photography by Students of the Photography Program at the California College of the Arts
Students of the photography program at the California College of the Arts (CCA) created the works in this exhibition. Founded in 1907, CCA is a private nonprofit art, design, and architecture school that offers a curriculum of twenty-two undergraduate and ten graduate programs. CCA is known for its interdisciplinary curriculum, breadth of programs, and commitment to social responsibility.
The title of this exhibition is a tribute to influential American photographer Larry Sultan (1946–2009). A beloved faculty member at CCA, he served as a Distinguished Professor of Photography for twenty years. Here and Home, his posthumous retrospective, was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 2014 and presented at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in 2017.
Sultan’s photography resonates with themes of home and family, and he encouraged his students to examine these themes in their own work. Photographs, which are passed down through generations, play an important role in how family members tell their stories. The student work in this exhibition follows in this legacy. Some of these photographers depict their families’ place of birth or where they grew up. Others depict their “chosen families” of friends and fellow artists that they met while living in San Francisco.
The airport remains a place in constant flux, where people arrive and depart, say goodbye and return home. This exhibition suggests that home is wherever you are—both here and now. The images encourage viewers to think about what Here and Home mean to us all. The photographs in this exhibition were created by a diverse group of emerging photographers from different parts of the world who explore their unique perspectives on home, family, and place through the lens of their cameras.
A very special thank you to California College of the Arts instructors Aspen Mays and Nelson Chan for making this exhibition possible.
