Jun Kaneko arrived in California from Japan in 1963 to study painting. Here, he encountered the revolutionary work of Peter Voulkos and other artists, who were using clay as an expressive sculptural medium. The experience was transformative, and he devoted himself to working in clay and experimenting with large-scale ceramic sculptures. He has become well-known for the signature forms he calls, "Dangos," a Japanese term that refers to a rounded shape. Never abandoning painting, Kaneko's sculptures are famous both for their forms and for their painted designs.
